Glorya Kaufman along with the late Dr. Leonard Apt of the Jules Stein Eye Clinic in West Los Angeles established the first pre-school mobile eye exam program to travel through the city of Los Angeles. The UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic, an outreach program of the Jules Stein Institute, received an allocation of $4.1 million from the First 5 LA commission to screen more than 90,000 children between the ages of 3 and 5 from underserved populations in the county. The purpose of this traveling eye exam unit was to discover eye problems prior to the children entering elementary school. In 2018, the following libraries hosted the Jules Stein Eye Clinic: Ascot, Baldwin Hills, Eagle Rock, Exposition Park, Lake View Terrace, Lincoln Heights, Little Tokyo, Mid-Valley Regional, Northride, RL Stevenson, San Pedro, Sun Valley, Vermont Square, Westchester and Wilmington.
