Glorya Kaufman’s endowment created the Music Center> so that it can exist in perpetuity in order to support the teaching and performance of dance and choreography. It also provides a means for underserved audiences to become acquainted with dance, as it serves as such an effective tool to bridge individuals socially and culturally with it’s universal appeal.
In addition to promoting performances, Glorya Kaufman’s gift provides so much to the community. It provides complimentary tickets to the underserved audiences to create greater awareness to the overall Los Angeles community. The Music Center hosts world-renowned artists (i.e. dancers and/or choreographers) and their master classes, lectures and other educational and outreach programs. This allows children, adults and the elderly to actively participate in dance.
“In this critical time when the recession is threatening philanthropy and our performing arts programs are struggling to survive in this country, Mrs. Kaufman set a powerful example for the private sector by stepping in to save the arts,” said John Emerson, Chairman of the Music Center.
While speaking to the audience at the Tour de Force Gala she said, “We must take heed to the call of our new President and do our part in a time of great difficulty in our country. Dance at the Music Center is and should be a vital part of our existence. I am thrilled that I am able, through my Glorya Kaufman Dance Foundation, return dance and the spirit of dance back to Los Ångeles. The arts are critical to the life blood of this nation during this time when the art programs are barely getting by, we must do our part to protect what could be lost. I couldnʼt be more proud to be a part of the Music Center as it brings world-class performances to our great city.”
The Glorya Kaufman Dance Foundation has collaborated with PACLAC to enable the city to bring world-class dance companies to Los Angeles to perform and be appreciated by Angelenos and to enable the city to become a premier venue for world-class dance performers. This year, during a milestone season celebrating their 10th anniversary, The Music Center will be honored to host the Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Alonzo King LINES Ballet + Hubbard Street Dance collaboration, Traces and works from Jacques Heim and Benjamin Millepied, to name a few. The Music Center will also be hosting the Bolshoi Ballet in their first performance at this venue since 2000, performing the exquisite Swan Lake.
Thousands of students are invited to see rehearsals and participate in master classes each season. The Spotlight Awards Program highlighted 300 students alone in 2012 and 2013, where they received one-on-one coaching by renowned artists throughout the year. Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance continues to make an impact on countless school children throughout California, impacting 230 schools and exposing 28,000 students to live dance performances. For the community, A Taste of Dance and Dance Downtown, signature Active Arts programs encourage people of all ages to enjoy dance by dancing themselves. The Music Center will also host this summer, July 27th 2013. Launched by Nigel Lythgoe, founder of Dizzy Feet, this is an annual celebration that encourages Americans to incorporate dance into their lives.
Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center is an exciting place to be this year.
