Glorya Kaufman along with the late Dr. Leonard Apt of the Jules Stein Eye Clinic in West Los Angeles established the first pre-school mobile eye exam program to travel thru the city of Los Angeles and examine children ages 3-5. The purpose of this traveling eye exam unit was to discover eye problems prior to the children entering elementary school.
Glorya Kaufman established an Eye Clinic at the Venice Family Clinic that would work in conjunction with the mobile eye exam program in order to provide additional exams, eye glasses and further eye care for the children.
Additionally, Glorya Kaufman helped to provide free surgery at the Children’s hospital if more medical care was needed. As of December 2009, on the tenth anniversary, it was announced that 4,500 pre-school children have been examined, and four doctors are donating their time to assist in the program.
